Nathula Pass – India-China border
If you go to Gangtok then this is a place you cannot miss. For this international Indo-China border you need a permit which can be easily obtaine in Gangtok. However, up to this point only Indian tourists are allowe. Foreigners are not allowed.
The border is such that you can actually see Chinese soldiers. As well as trucks passing from India to China or the other way. On the way to the border, you can keep a good eye on Tsongamo Lake. There is another temple on the way which is considered very sacred by the locals. To reach this point, shared taxis and private taxis are easily available from the taxi stand in Gangtok.
Like the rest of Sikkim, not much is known about the history of the town. It remained a small boon until the creation of the Enchei Monastery of Buddhist teachings in 1840, which made it a pilgrimage site. It became a major city after the British invasion and then the center of trade between Tibet and British India. Most of the roads were built during this time, infrastructure was improved, and the telegraph system was revised.
After India’s independence in 1947. Gangtok remained an independent monarchy, and a treaty was signed between King Chogyal and the then Prime Minister of India- Jawaharlal Nehru to follow a monarchical rule. The state and its capital did not follow democratic rule.
Finally in 1975, after decades of political uncertainties, conflicts and riots, the monarchy was abolished, and Sikkim became the second state with Gangtok as the official capital of India.

One of the most important attractions of Gangtok is the ropeway-a and fro cable car rides. It gives you a panoramic view of the entire Gangtok Township. Each ride can carry up to 24 passengers and there are three stations in a 1 km ride. Boarding point Deorali, next stop Namanang and destination- Tashiling. You can stop at any of these but it is advisable to take the ride back. Gangtok ropeway operates between 8 am and 4:30 pm every day. Gangtok is inhabited by people of various ethnicities including Nepali, Bhutia and Lepcha. These various religious groups and communities keep the traditional culture and identity of the city alive.
